The titbids of the farm-The gopher and the tunnel
The gophers dig the tunnels about 6 inches deep down the surface of the ground.
One gopher lived under the ground. Besides the paths led to all directions, there were several vents to maintain fresh air in the tunnel as well as to easy escape.
In the daytime, the gopher was afraid of the predators such as falcons in the air and cats on the ground. It stayed underground clearing the paths.
At night, it moved to the ground and nibbled the roots and stems of the greens.
Before sun rose, it opened the vents to refresh the air in the paths, then closed the vents. It would not reopen the vents until the night came.
For lack of sufficient air in the tunnel, once in a while, it made sure there was nobody on the ground and reopened the vents for refreshing the air.
The cat patiently attended by the vent, reached out the palm and snatched it right upon the vent was opened.
農場小故事-地鼠與地洞
地鼠挖洞離開地面約六吋深的地層裡.
一隻地鼠住地底下. 牠的地洞有四通八達的地道, 又有好幾處通氣孔, 維持地道空氣流暢, 兼可逃生.
白天, 牠怕天上的鷹和地上的貓捕捉牠, 牠躲在地洞清理通道.
晚上, 牠到地面活動, 啃嚙菜葉根莖.
太陽東昇前, 牠將幾個通氣孔打開, 讓地道充滿新鮮空氣後, 關閉通氣孔. 直到夜晚降臨, 再打開通氣孔外出.
有時洞內氧氣欠缺, 牠聽地面完全沒動靜, 方始打開地洞, 透透氣.
貓很有耐心等候洞旁, 等到地洞開口, 五爪一伸, 將牠捕獲.
